In paragraph six in “ Our Vanishing Night”, Klinkenborg writes, essay it says how “ We lit up the night as if it were an occupied country,” it means that we have filled our cities with refracted lights that overlit cities from public gas lights in the streets and houses lit by gas. As it may seem that if there is no light there will be nobody present but that's far from the truth. They discussed the different animals that need darkness to live and talk about bats, frogs, toads, and turtles all needing darkness to live because either it was an easier way for them to to be targets to their predators, or light taking over their environment not being able to adapt to their surroundings causing them to find fewer and fewer of them to nest. This would also have a major effect on pollution, energy consumption has increased and society has been affected by the lights at dark.

In paragraph 6 of “Our Vanishing Night”, Klinkenborg writes, “We’ve lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be farther from the truth.” What Klinkenborg means by this is that we have lit up the night with man-made light as if humans are the only ones living here, and being affected by the light, however, this is extremely incorrect. The country and Earth are not only occupied by humans, but also many other forms of life that are affected by this artificial light that humans have lit up the night with. When humans decided to make all of these lights in cities and keep lights on for longer hours, we didn't take into account the disturbances this may cause in wildlife. When making these decisions humans only had the benefits to humans in mind, and not the disturbances light pollution might have on the other forms of life, that we share the Earth with.

The night sky has no need for man-made lights, as written by Kinkenborg in par. 6: "We've lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth". In recent times people have been filling up our natural cycle of darkness with harmful lights. This not only has consequences for our wildlife and Earth but for us as well. The sky glows at night with an orange hue instead of displaying countless bright stars, all from our excessive light usage. Baby sea turtles often get confused about where to go when they hatch, all from our excessive light usage. Even our bodies detect this phenomenon, our cycle shifts, and suddenly our days are longer, our sleep even shorter. The night is occupied by our greed. The extended time of an artificial sun guarantees us more work hours, hours for our own gain.

Klinkenborg says that "We've lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth" we have done this by creating mass amounts of artificial light that are competing with the light coming from the night sky. The places with the most amount of people are in the big cities where there are tons of light so it's really the places with the most amount of light that have the least amount night sky light. The night light that humans produce affects the things the occupy the night. The night light affects animals greatly, their migration patterns, feeding, and habitats. The animals that occupy the night and are nocturnal are affected because they have less time where they can actually hunt. Also birds migration are messed up because the biological timing gets messed up with the timings of the day due to the artificial light making artificially longer days.

We have lit up the night sky by The amount of light pollution we let into our atmosphere. We are over lit and have started to change migration patterns and mating patterns for wild animals, like toads mating call time, baby turtles ability to get to the sea. It has started to affect us, women have had an increase breast cancer rate. We could prevent this by pointing our lights downward but we haven't done that yet, which is pointed out in paragraph 2 of "our vanishing night". It was first believed that we weren't affected by light pollution and that it only affect astronomers and their ability to see the stars.

In paragraph 6, Klinkenborg writes "We've lit up the night sky as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth" because us humans have taken over the night sky with man-made light not considering the affects that it would have on humans but also animals. It has replaced the darkness with light which means we have caused natural darkness to be limited. Birds migrate at night but then collide into bright lit buildings, insects die from the lamp posts because of the heat from the bulb, turtles die because they are attracted to the wrong light, but it also makes it easy for their predator to attack them because their is no dark to disguise (hide) them and is leading to some species becoming extinct. The light pollution problem have negatively impacted many species and will continue to increase if we don't do something now.

When Klinkenborg writes "We've lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth," what he is trying to say is that the night is not unoccupied at all. We've put up so many streetlights, and porch lights, lights from buildings, making the nighttime brighter than ever. Acting like all of this doesn't affect anything, when it is affecting all of the nocturnal species that need and use the darkness of the night to live. Not only are there nocturnal animals that are affected by this but humans too. We run on a cycle, and the main driving force of this cycle is light, which used to be supplied by the sun. Now that there are so many artificial lights, our internal clocks are messed up, causing people to lose sleep, and be less rested in the day time.

"We've lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country when nothing could be further from the truth." At night we turn our light source all around the world; a mass amount of of man light. Many nocturnal animals suffer from this. Sea turtles follow the start to find their way to the sea, instead finding themselves in the city. Nocturnal animals have a to hide since their predator can see them through the man light. Were shorting the night and making the day longer. We might think it only affects them nonetheless it affects us too. Using street lights and having a daytime during the night. The quality time for sleep gets shorter as well.
