Mike Rose had very influential teachers throughout his grade school years. Some of them had positive impacts on him, while others were negative. Brother Dill was a rather abusive English teacher who used force to control the classroom; he was unfit to be a teacher because of his paranoia, and he created fear, embarrassment, and anger in Rose after slapping him. An unnamed gym teacher was also very abusive and racist towards Rose since he took advantage of his position as an authority figure, calling Rose derogatory words and saying that hitting his students was to “make a man of them”; these actions have negative impacts on developing children since it teaches them that violence is okay to use against other people. Mr. Mitropetros was an inadequately educated English teacher who had little training in the language and did not academically challenge Rose or his classmates since they reread the same material the entire school year. Mr. Montez was underprepared and unable to interact well with his students enough to maintain authority in the class, so Rose was not able to learn anything since the environment was uncontrolled. Brother Slattery used a harsh tone and weekly quizzes to encourage Rose and his classmates to pass his world history class, which only motivated them to a certain point since they were not able to engage their imaginations. Brother Clint was the teacher who realized Rose was mistakenly put into the Voc. Ed. class by looking at his biology test scores, and the school’s records; he was able to switch Rose to College Prep starting his junior year, which challenged him and expanded his learning. A priest who taught classes and was the school’s athletic director let Rose and his athletic classmates slip in their studies because he wanted them to play, this did not benefit them in the long run. Mr. MacFarland was able to open Rose to a new world of learning by engaging his imagination, urging him to do his personal best in class, and creating a relationship with him; Rose was able to find intrinsic motivation for receiving good grades in class, and become interested in going to college because of Mr. MacFarland.

The teachers at Our Lady of Mercy had varying impacts on Mike Rose, in both positive and negative ways all of the teachers enforced the standard that "Students will float to the mark you set"
Brother Dill: the verbally and physically abusive English teacher that Rose had in his Freshman year. Brother Dill reinforced the belief in students on the vocational track that they were "bad kids" and deserved to be treated as such.
Mr. Mitropetros: The Sophomore English teacher of Mike Rose. This teacher seemed preoccupied with his other job parking cars and his life outside of the school, it became clear to Mike and the other kids that he did not care enough about them to develop an actual lesson plan and this gave clearance to the disrespect that the kids threw back in his face. "We'd ask questions and glance knowingly and snicker" the children could tell that this teacher would not discipline them because he did not care enough and this perpetuated the cycle of not lack of motivation to do well in school.
Mr. Montez: The Spanish I teacher at Our Lady of Mercy. Mr. Montez did not have any authority over the children due to his lack of discipline skills, it was this laissez-faire attitude that gave way to the students misbehaving. The students blatantly fought each other and continued the poor behavior because they were just testing the limits of the teachers authority, goes in line with the statement about floating to the line that is set, the line is nonexistent for Mr. Montez's room so the children will run free.
Brother Slattery: World history teacher that wanted to try and make a difference with the children. Slattery had more authority and tried to impose weekly work to keep the kids engaged, but Rose reveals that it took more of a creative perspective to teach the material as many of the children were not familiar with the textbook ways of learning information.
Brother Clint: One of the more influential teachers in Mike Rose's life, Brother Clint was the one who noticed that Mike did not really belong in the vocational track and fought to have him moved up. Brother Clint was teaching all levels of kids the same material and was able to alter the method of teaching enough to gain respect from the students and make the material interesting, at least for Mike Rose. All it took for Mike Rose to begin to break out of the cyclical ways of the vocational program was for one teacher to take note, that teacher was Brother Clint.
Mr. MacFarland: Jack MacFarland was an instrumental figure in Mike Rose's life, not only in getting him interesting in literature and excited about school, but he also helped Mike pursue higher education and think of other courses for his life to take. Jack MacFarland assigned a lot of coursework, comparable to a private boarding school. However, the literature that he assigned and the discussions had in the classroom kept the students engaged and commanded their respect, despite previous judgements about him. Jack MacFarland saw the passion for writing and reading that Mike Rose had and other like him, so he started a club outside of school to give those students a space to explore literature and different identities within themselves that they did not know they could pursue. Not only did Mr. MacFarland help Mike get into college and find a passion for writing, but he gave him an opportunity to branch into a new world of friendships, interests, and personality.

Throughout his years at the vocational school and the college prep classes, Rose had an abundance of teachers, all of whom had different impacts on his life. Brother Dill was the physically and verbally abusive homeroom monitor and freshman English teacher of Rose. His teaching style enforced poor ideals into his students; teaching them that they were bad kids and that mistakes were unacceptable. Mr. Mitropetros was the sophomore English teacher of Rose. Mitropetros had a night job of parking cars, which was what most of his attention and energy went towards, meaning he neglected his day job and never had legitimate lesson plans. Mitropetros likely gave his students the impression that teachers don't actually care about their students and have more important things in their lives. Mr. Montez taught Spanish and was a new teacher, and was not rightfully equipped for the job. The class Rose happened to be in was a rowdy class, and Montez did not know how to rightfully deal with students who were acting up, thus causing the class to only be worse. After a fight broke out in the class, the little authority Montez had evaporated, causing students to question how they are able to act around authority. Brother Slattery was a world history with high expectations and a firm sense of authority. His teaching methods were very much by the book, however they were largely unsuccessful due to most of the students requiring a more creative and interactive approach to learning. Brother Clint was Rose's biology teacher who noticed that Rose was doing extremely well in his class. After checking the school's records, he noticed the error that Rose was incorrectly placed in vocational school, and worked to get him placed into the college prep courses. This changed Rose's life, as all of a sudden he was placed into a new environment far different from the one he was so used to. Finally, Jack MacFarland was Rose's senior English teacher. Similarly to Brother Slattery, MacFarland had high expectations of his students and assigned lots of work, unlike Slattery however, MacFarland was passionate about his career and what he was teaching his students. He was able to get his class, including Rose, excited about literature and about learning. MacFarland had a huge impact on Rose's life, as he was able to spark a love of learning, and got Rose into college.

Mike Roses first teacher he speaks about it Brother Dill. Brother Dill was described as a troubled and unstable man, which i think reflects how Mike felt at the moment with being at a new school that was different from past schooling. Mr. Mitropetros wasn’t very focused on the kids and didn’t push them in what he taught allowing for the kids like Mike to become even more stuck in the system that wants them to stay average or below. Mr. Mortez had little control of his room and after the accident with Billy and Dweetz he had no control. I think the reason why Mike include Mr. Mortez was to illustrate that the freedom they got from Mr. Mortez losing control didn’t benefit him or his fellow classmates. The next teacher mentioned was Mr. Gross, he was another pretty average teacher that taught well but it wouldn’t give you skills to go beyond the average joe kind of jobs. The last teacher was Jack MacFarland which probably had the most impact on Mike. Mike says “he gave me a way to feel special by using my mind”, which he hadn’t ever really been able to do in previous classes. Mr. MacFarland helped push Mike to go to college as well to become more of a scholar and to understand the importance of knowledge.

Mike Rose had many different teachers who affected him in different ways. His homeroom teacher in his first year of high school was Brother Dill. He was also the English teacher that year and was the type of teacher who got very annoyed when the class wasn't paying attention and would smack the kids, Rose included. Rose's gym teacher isn't named but was obviously not a very good teacher, in that he would beat the kids "to make men out of them". Rose's English teacher for his sophomore year, Mr. Mitropetros, didn't have much experience teaching English and the class just read the play "Julius Caesar" over and over again for the whole class. His Spanish I teacher, Mr. Montez, seemed to have very little authority over the students, and slowly lost what little he had throughout the class. Rose talks about how most of the teachers in his track didn't really know how to handle the students, although some, like Brother Slattery, did really try to make a difference with education. When Rose originally came to the school, he was placed in the vocational track on accident. The teacher who realized he wasn't supposed to be there was Brother Clint, his biology teacher in his sophomore year. Rose cheated in order to pass the tests, but this caught the attention of the teacher, who looked into it and realized that Rose was actually supposed to be taking College Prep classes. The shift was hard for Rose because his years in the vocational track had filled him up with "scholastic indifference". His father had been injured and confined to a wheelchair, so his new English teacher, Jack McFarland, entered his life at the perfect time. Mr McFarland helped Rose to enjoy reading again, and assisted him in getting into a university, the first in his family. This eventually led Rose to be successful in life.

Brother Dill was Mike Rose's homeroom teacher in addition to teaching freshman English in vocational education. He had trouble keeping his class together often which resulted in yelling and smacking students. The physical education teacher, whose name was never stated, was similarly pretty harsh. He often verbally harassed students as well as hitting them with a paddle. Mr. Mitropetros was supposed to teach sophomore English and had very little training resulting in little respect from the students and boring, repetitive lesson plans. Mr. Montez, a new teacher, taught Spanish I in Rose’s second year. Montez was not ready for the behavior disruptions and lack of focus of students on the vocational track. He also ended up losing control of his students but never really had any way to get their attention back. Mike Rose appreciated Brother Clint’s ability to teach. He used the same textbook and syllabus for all classes, slowing down when needed and omitting whatever wasn’t necessary for their overall understanding of biochemistry. He could control any class and no one tested his authority. He even found the error with Rose's placement on the vocational track and started him on the college prep track in junior year. Jack MacFarland, teaching senior English, changed Mike Rose’s life. He was intelligent and respected in Rose’s eyes. Rose found his passion with MacFarland who even got him a spot at Loyola University after Rose thought college was out of reach.

While attending Our Lady of Mercy school Mike Rose was impacted by his many teachers. He first attended the vocational school and later switched to college prep courses. His first vocational school teacher, Brother Dill, was a troubled and violent English teacher who often physically assaulted his students. His unnamed physical education teacher used similar control tactics and ran a very harsh class. Mr. Mitropetros was Rose's sophomore English teacher. He was a very boastful man who nobody took seriously. He had little experience teaching English and would often repeat his lessons. Mr. Montez, Rose's Spanish Teacher, was new and lacked the skills to handle the children he was teaching. His classroom was often out of control unmanaged. Brother Slattery wanted and tried hard to teach his student world history. However, he was unable to keep the students engaged. Brother Clint taught Biology. He made the class interesting and ultimately was the one who discovered the error that was made regarding Rose's educational placement. Mr. MacFarland was Rose's first College Prep teacher and had a huge impact on his education and future. He brought out Rose's interest for reading and writing and showed Rose the talent and potential he had. He got him thinking about college and helped him get into a college he could be successful at. Mr. MacFarland was one of the teachers who had a positive impact on his life and truly made a difference in his education.

The first teacher Rose mentions is Brother Dill. He was a grumpy, aggressive, and abusive man who was Mike's homeroom adviser that portrayed his hatred towards those on the vocational track.
The second teacher mentioned is Mike Rose’s physical education teacher. Though his name was not given, he was described as an equally harsh man who abused the students to "make them into men”.
Mr. Mitropetros taught sophomore english. He was a “large, bejeweled man” as Rose describes, who loved to brag about his life, including his second job (car parking). He was not an experienced teacher and would constantly make students repeat the same lessons.
Mr. Montez taught Spanish I. He was described as a tiny, weak man with little-to-no authority. Students would act out in his class and he could do nothing about it.
Brother Slattery was another one of Mike’s teachers who was described to be stern. He worked hard to be a good teacher but was unaware of how to encourage students to participate.
Brother Clint was Mike’s sophomore biology teacher who taught students more or less the same, regardless of if they were a part of the vocational track or not. He was tough and received no trouble from students. He was also the person who noticed the error and had Mike moved up to college prep, where he belonged.
Mr. MacFarland or Jack MacFarland was the last teacher mentioned, and the most significant in Mike’s life. He seemed unprofessional at first, and students took him to be a joke, but he provided them with plenty of hard work and knew how to get the class involved. Mr. MacFarland revived Mike’s interest in literature and led him to pursue a higher education outside of high school. He ensured that Mike was admitted to an adequate university. He was perhaps the only teacher aside from Brother Clint who had a positive impact on Mike’s life.

Mike Rose had several influential teachers while he was in grade school, some had very positive impacts on him while others had more negative ones. However, all of the teachers display the same standard that “Students will float to the mark you set.”
Brother Dill: He had the most negative impact on Mike Rose’s life. He was a very verbally and physically abusive teacher Mike had in his freshman year for english. His teaching style enforced the idea into his students that mistakes in life were unacceptable and that they were “bad” children that should be treated badly in return.
Mr. Mitropetros: He had somewhat less of a negative impact on Mike Rose’s life compared to Brother Dill. However, he was more preoccupied with his life outside of school with a second job parking cars. To Mike and the other students he didn't care enough to make lesson plans for them and to teach which gave the children the impression that teachers do not care about their students and have other more important things/tasks in their lives.
Mr. Montez: He had a very conflict avoidance attitude. This attitude caused him to have no authority over the students which made him a negative but neutral impact in Mike's life. Like most children the students tested their teachers limit of authority but because Mr. Montez seriously lacked discipline skills, the students of the classroom concluded that there was no mark set to achieve so they can make the decisions and call on whatever they want to do. For some more naturally motivated students Mr. Montez could have been a neutral teacher with no impact but because of the children in Mike's class because they essentially set the mark they chose set it very low making it a more negative impact.
Brother Slattery: This teacher is one that left a more positive but again neutral impact on Mike Rose. He is sort of like a middle ground with Mr. Montez except he had a standard. He truly wanted to make a difference in his students' lives which gave him more authority. However, his perspective of teaching was one that did not suit his students' learning styles which is the only major flaw he had in impacting the children's success.
Brother Clint: He is one of the teachers who left a positive and influential impact on Mike’s life. He is one of the teachers who fought for Mike to be taken out of the vocational school and needed to be moved on to some higher college prep coursework. This teacher dramatically changed Mike Rose’s life by moving him into a new environment he wasn’t used to. He also taught his students the material in varying ways that made it both interesting and helped him gain the respect of his students.
Mr. MacFarland: He had the most positive impact on Mike Rose. He was similar to Brother Slatterly in the sense that he had high expectations of his students and assigned a lot of work. However, he saw the passion that his other students and Mike Rose had for reading and writing. Thus he started a club outside of school for those students giving them a space to explore literature and also themselves in ways they never had before. Mr. MacFarland not only helped Mike Rose get into college but he also helped him discover his passion for writing and gave him an opportunity to branch out in the world.

During Mike's four years in high school, he had various teachers that had various different impacts on him. Most of the experiences he had with his teachers were negative but eventually his senior year, one teacher turned it around for him. Brother Dill was Mikes freshman year English teacher, he was very temperamental and abusive towards his students. One time, Brother Dill slapped Mike and knocked his glasses off his face. Brother Dill enforced the idea that those in positions of power could use fear and force to get their way. Mikes sophomore year English teacher, Mr. Mitropetros, who was not adequately educated in the subject of English and spent so much time obsessing over his other job he never actually taught his students anything. This enforced Mikes idea that teachers did not really care about their students and that they had more important things to do rather than care about their education. Mr Montez was Mikes Spanish 1 teacher, he was too soft spoken and the students in his classes walked all over him. He was neverl able to really teach his students anything because he could not keep control of his classroom. Brother Slattery was the first teacher Mike had to actually care and make an effort. He was stern and gave out weekly quizzes, but the way he was teaching didn't work for kids that don't learn in the traditional textbook way. Brother Clint was Mikes biology teacher, and he was the first teacher to pay enough attention to Mike to notice that he did not belong in Voc. Ed. and got him moved up to college prep classes for his junior year. This was the start of Mike starting to possibly care about his education again. But, when he started his junior year he was so behind in all his classes from being in Voc. Ed. and he had a teacher that was also the athletic director that passes Mike and all the other athletes. That was a setback for him because he didn't feel like he had to work for it anymore. And finally his senior year English teacher Mr. MacFarland that taught in a way that Mike and his other students were able to engage with. He spent a lot of time on his lessons and truly cared about his students which earned him the respect of everyone. He got Mike to start caring about his education again and to actually put in effort. He also went out of his way to help Mike get into his Alma Mater so that he could attend college. Mr. MacFarland was by far the best teacher Mike had in high school and had a really positive impact on him.

In the short story "I just Wanna Be Average", Mike Rose talks about his educational experience at "Our Lady of Mercy” and the teachers there. The teachers had many different influences on him, both negative and positive.
The first teacher, his freshman year homeroom teacher Brother Dill, was “a troubled and unstable man who also taught Freshman English.” He was an extremely paranoid man and when the students would start drifting their attention, he would lose his temper and “his voice would rise in paranoid accusations, and occasionally he would lose control and shake or smack us.”
The second teacher was an unnamed gym teacher, who also had an extremely negative influence on Rose. He would routinely hold the children by the ankles and paddle their butts to make “men out of them.”
The third teacher was named Mr. Mitropetros, an ex-NFL player who wouldn’t teach but instead would talk and brag about the other football stars he had run into. He was supposed to be teaching Sophomore English but because he had little English teaching, he would only go over the district required reading Julius Caesar over and over.
The fourth teacher was Mr Montez, a new teacher, who taught Spanish I. Because he was a new teacher, he lacked the discipline skills required for high school students and therefore the students in Spanish I were constantly acting up.
The fifth teacher was Mr. Slatterly, who was the first positive influence as a teacher at “Our Lady of Mercy”. He had a very creative style of teaching and found enjoyment in teaching, but he had a hard time engaging his students.
The sixth teacher was Brother Clint, Rose’s sophomore Biology teacher, who was the first person who recognized that Rose didn’t belong in the vocational group. He didn’t discriminate against kids being in the vocational group or not and would teach the same to everyone. This gained him the respect of the kids. He moved Rose from the vocational group to the college prep group.
The seventh and last teacher was Mr. MacFarland, the most positively influential teacher that Rose had. He knew how to get students motivated to work and was enjoyable to work with. He inspired Rose to go to college and made sure that Rose got to a good college.

Brother Dill: This was Mike's freshman year English teacher. He was very abusive towards his students, both physically and mentally. Brother Dill introduced the fact that some teachers use power for authority.
Mr Mitropetros: This teacher was not very focused on the students whatsoever. This gave them clearance to disrespect him whenever, because they knew that they would not be disciplined if they did so.
Mr Montez: Again, this teacher didn't really care nor respect the students. This causes the students to do whatever they want because there is no bar set by the teacher.
Brother Slattery: This teacher actually enjoyed teaching, so this allowed him to have a bit more authority over his students. However, his teaching style did not allow the students to engage, creating a very neutral environment.
Brother Clint: Brother Clint was the first teacher who recognized that Mike did not belong in the vacational group and really fought for him to be moved to the college prep group. This teacher was able to gain the respect of the students.

Rose's Homeroom teacher Brother Dill during his freshman year at Our Lady of Mercy high school was physically and verbally abusive English teacher a teacher that often lost his temper and shake or smack a student. Rose's sophomore English teacher Mr. Miltropetros who worked a second job at parking cars and wasn't very skilled in teaching English. The teacher in fact didn't in fact create lesson plans for the class, and the students would often screw around and ignore class as the teacher didn't punish the kids for not paying attention. Mr. Montez was Rose's Spanish teacher he was new to the schools and his lack of disciplinary action towards students led to a fight happening in the class, this is where Rose writes about students will float to the mark you set and he felt that him and other students were bobbing in shallow water. Brother Slattery was the world history teacher and he tried to be harsher on the students by giving them weekly quizzes to encourage the class a little more. but all it ended up doing was limiting the students creativity since he used the textbooks as a way to teach and many students weren't familiar with that type of learning. Brother Clint was a more important teacher to Rose as he set him on a path to move up out of the Voc. ed. because he knew Rose did not belong in that track of education and helped Rose to start moving out of that class. The final teacher is Mr. MacFarland who had the largest impact on Rose got him into literature and to be more involved in school but also helped convince Rose to pursue a higher education. He made students like Rose participate much more in class with discussions and required them to read books and have many conversations about what they were reading.

Brother Dill was the homeroom supervisor who also taught freshman English. He is described as unstable and is said to have harsh punishments. He is described to yell along with physically attacking students for bad behavior. Mr Mitropetros was a sophomore English teacher. He was not very disciplined and would be ignored a lot. Mr Montez was the Spanish I teacher. He is described as a small man and in a school where confidence and physical strength is respected he had a hard time. Brother Slattery teaches world history. He cares about the students and generally enjoys his job. Brother Clint was influential to Rose and was the one who recommended him to be placed in the college prep. Mr MacFarland encouraged the students to take more interest in school and was very influential.
