Post your answers to the discussion question here. Make sure to read the responses of those posted before you and respond directly to them when appropriate before posting your own. Connections: Rose is put on the vocational track accidentally and remains there for two years because his parents are unequipped to help him. Compare his responses to the particular learning environment in which he found himself with those of Sherman Alexie in "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" (link below). How does it feel to each? What larger significance does each find in the experience? What connections can you find between the larger meanings each writer reflects upon? www.teach4real.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/The-Joy-of-Reading-and-Writing.pdf

Rose and Alexie come from foreign families who don’t speak English as their first language. They are looked down upon in the educational system, and expected to perform poorly in school and in life. Rose and Alexie speak about students around them having potential to do something great, but are not recognized because they don’t fit a certain “mold” to be successful. They are often dismissed and don’t get the support and encouragement they need to put effort into their studies. Alexie and Rose were able to overcome their learning struggles and prove the people around them wrong. During the beginning of their learning journeys, barriers put in place against these authors made them feel discouraged and angry, but they were eventually able to create some form of intrinsic motivation to learn. For Rose, a door was opened to him by his teacher Mr. MacFarland through books. Alexie found intrinsic motivation to do well and achieve things in life through his love for books. Rose came to a realization that books opened him up to a world where he could experience all sorts of things, not just in the confinement of his hometown. Alexie was able to not only access his potential through reading and writing, but give back to the community by inspiring other children who were in his same position to overcome challenges as well. Both authors realize that their love for books connected them to learning and exposed them to a world outside their norm.
